Atlanta might be known for its bustling city life, world-class dining, and deep-rooted history, but let me tell you—it’s also an outdoor lover’s dream. Whether you’re into hiking, kayaking, biking, or just strolling through a lively farmers market, this city has something for you. And because this is Outdoorsy Aunt, you know I’m going to tell you where to find the best of it.
Scenic Trails & Urban Green Escapes
You don’t have to leave the city to find some amazing trails. Atlanta’s got greenspaces hidden in plain sight, plus some incredible hikes just a short drive away.
Piedmont Park – If you’re looking for an easy stroll with skyline views, this is the place. The BeltLine runs through it, connecting you to some of Atlanta’s best food spots.
Sweetwater Creek State Park – Less than 30 minutes from downtown, this park offers waterfalls, rocky riverbanks, and trails that lead past ruins of a Civil War-era textile mill. Feels like you stepped into a movie (which is why they actually filmed The Hunger Games here).
Arabia Mountain – An underrated gem! The rock formations, wildflowers, and otherworldly landscapes make this hike feel like you’ve left Georgia entirely. Bonus: it’s way less crowded than Stone Mountain.
And if you’re willing to drive a little further, Amicalola Falls and Providence Canyon (aka Georgia’s “Little Grand Canyon”) are absolute musts for hikers.
Water Adventures Without Leaving the City
Did you know you can kayak right through Atlanta? The Chattahoochee River (or just “The Hooch” if you’re local) runs along the city’s edge, offering everything from peaceful paddleboarding to tubing with a cold drink in hand. The best spots to launch?
Morgan Falls Overlook Park – Perfect for beginners looking for calm waters.
Powers Island – If you want to kayak with a little more flow, this is your spot.
Shoot the Hooch – Rent a tube, grab some friends, and float down the river the lazy way.
Prefer lakes? Lake Lanier and Lake Allatoona are just a short drive away, offering beaches, fishing, and boat rentals.
Farmers Markets & Foodie Havens
An outdoor adventure isn’t complete without good food, and Atlanta’s farmers markets and food halls deliver.
Grant Park Farmers Market – One of the best in the city. Grab some locally roasted coffee, fresh produce, and a homemade pastry before hitting the trails.
Your DeKalb Farmers Market – This is more than a market—it’s a global grocery store with fresh spices, baked goods, and foods from around the world.
Ponce City Market – This isn’t just a food hall; it’s an experience. Grab a bite, explore the rooftop, and maybe even take a fitness class before heading out on your next adventure.
Festivals & Live Music Under the Stars
Atlanta knows how to throw a festival, and if you love live music, art, and food, you’ll never run out of things to do. A few of my favorites:
Atlanta Jazz Festival (May) – One of the largest free jazz festivals in the country, held in Piedmont Park.
Chomp & Stomp (November) – A chili cook-off AND a bluegrass festival? Sign me up.
Candler Park Music Festival (June) – A laid-back music fest in one of Atlanta’s coolest neighborhoods.
And if you just want a casual night under the stars, Concerts in the Garden at the Atlanta Botanical Garden is the ultimate vibe.
Why Atlanta Should Be Your Next Outdoor Escape
Atlanta blends nature and city life in a way that just works. One minute you’re hiking a scenic trail, the next you’re sipping craft beer at a rooftop bar overlooking the skyline. So if you love the outdoors but still want access to great food, music, and culture, Atlanta might just be your perfect playground.
Next time you’re in the city, skip the usual tourist traps and hit the trails, rivers, and markets instead. Trust me—your adventurous side will thank you.
